Orange barrels along I-640 in Knox County are a memorial for those killed on the job

Today marks the beginning of National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 21-25). KNOXVILLE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF)- This is National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 21-25, and the Tennessee Department of Transportation would like to stress the importance of slowing down in work zones.

Over the years, 113 TDOT employees have died in the line of duty, and many more have been hurt statewide doing their very important and dangerous jobs.

“We have 113 orange barrels set up along I-640 East near the Western Avenue exit in Knoxville as a memorial for the 113 who have been killed on the job,” said Mark Nagi, Regional Communications Officer for the Tennessee Department of Transportation – Region 1.
