Parade organizers are searching for ways to make the parade bigger and better

LAFOLLETTE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF)- Vietnam Veteran Ed Housley, Chairman of the 2024 Veterans Day Parade, announces the Veterans Day Parade for La Follette and Campbell County is set for Saturday, November 9, at 2 pm.
The parade will begin near the La Follette Methodist Church and travel along Central Avenue to the Sonic Drive-In.

Parade organizers are searching for ways to make the parade bigger and better. Would you please consider entering a float with prizes for the first, second, and third place winners? Youth groups as well as church and other community groups are encouraged to seek ways to participate.
A couple new features this year will include several activities featured at the intersection of First Street and East Central Avenue. It’s hoped that attendees will make their way to the central part of downtown.

All banners honoring our local heroes will be in the parade. Volunteers are needed to carry the banners. If you would like to carry a banner, please contact Emma McCarty at 423-907-3754. As the banners approach First and Central, there will be a 21-gun salute, and taps will be played as we honor those veterans who are no longer with us.
All veterans are being encouraged to march in the parade for a couple of short blocks from Carl Pierce Furniture to Russell Towers. For those veterans who might be uncomfortable walking, transportation will be provided.
A planned “swearing in ceremony” for new Marines will take place at First and Central. Lots of military vehicles will be included if they are available. Many of the military vehicles are being used with Helene hurricane recovery. A fly over is also in the works.

Of course, local bands and scouts and elected officials will be in the parade.
If you plan to enter a float and want to compete or if you want to enter a vehicle or group, please contact Ed Housley for an application. You can do that by a telephone call or a text to 423-489-2792.
Please help make this veterans day parade the best one ever. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-10/14/2024-6AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF WLAF’S CHARLIE HUTSON)
