Campbell, Claiborne and Union Counties would come together for the annual event

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- The Tri County Fair begin in 1916 at the Lafollette Fair Ground, known today as the East and West 4th Street area near Hollingsworth’s Meat Market.

The fair was much like today’s Tennessee Valley Fair at Knoxville. It was a four or five day event and would draw in hundreds of people from Campbell, Claiborne and Union Counties.  Union County was only separated by the Powell River from Campbell County in those days before there was a Norris Lake.

The fair included all types of exhibits, big band music, shows and horse racing. Lafollette downtown merchants were huge supporters of the fair, because it would bring a lot of customers from all over to shop at the local stores. The fair was very profitable for the local businesses.

In 1941, it all came to an end. The property was sold and later became a housing development. The history of the fair ground is an interesting story from another time. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-06/05/2025-6AM)

  1. Why can’t we have a fair ground in Campbell county? Only place I’ve ever lived that has no sort of a fair. Seems to me we as a county are missing out on a lot of $$$.
