Campbell County Highway Department veteran celebrated on Friday

JACKSBORO STATION, TN (WLAF)- Only Tony Malone’s work ethic might be bigger than his imposing size and toughness. The man with the deep voice will no longer be behind the wheel of his white four wheel drive county road department truck. At the end of the month, Malone is handing over his keys for a fishing pole and baby sitting duties and maybe even a little farming.
After working 25 years for the Campbell County Highway Department, the last nine as assistant road superintendent, Malone was celebrated on Friday with a barbecue lunch, and, of course, quite the appropriate retirement cake. “He’s been right here beside me. Whether the job called for going two days or even three days straight, he was ready,” said Campbell Road Superintendent Ron Dilbeck.

“It’s been an honor to work here with a great crew (our guys), super office staff and those who work with us outside this truck yard; our vendors, the utility and water departments and others. Now Ron and I didn’t always agree on everything, but there’s no better boss than Ron,” said Malone.

After about six months on the job as road superintendent, Dilbeck realized he needed a right hand man. “I could not have picked anyone any better than Tony,” said Dilbeck.

“The people here made my job easier, and I love them. It’s been a team effort. It’s been great,” said Malone.
“Tony had my back 24/7. I’d say about six out of every ten times snow was predicted or it had just started snowing, Tony was already out. There was no need to call him,” said Dilbeck.

“When he mentioned he’d been thinking about retiring, I told him to do what Tony wants, but I’m sure gonna miss you. I hope him the best,” said Dilbeck.”
“We had some good times trying to help everyone, and I know Ron’s replacing me with a good guy in Jason (Bourff). He’ll put his heart into it.,” said Malone.

“If you need me, holler. Now let’s eat some food,” said Malone. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-03/17/2025-6AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF WLAF’S CHARLIE HUTSON)
PUBLISHER’S NOTE: From all of us at WLAF, thank you, Tony. You’ve been great to work with, and we are going to miss you. We wish you the best.
Tony, Congratulations on your retirement. Enjoy that time with your new Grand baby and whatever it is you enjoy doing. Jeff you do have some big shoes to fill, but presume your aware of that. Good luck in your new role.
We came to live here permanently 25 years ago to enjoy our retirement. At the time we did not realize what a little snow could do to cripple any movement out of our little community. Thanks to Ron, Tony and their crews, we were enlightened by their diligence in keeping these back rounds passable plus many other helpful things like road signs, downed trees and their removal from the roads plus more. The women in the office, Kathy and Kelly have always been helpful. This is a team who is always ready to help.
