NASHVILLE, TN. (WLAF)- During the 2025 legislative session, more than 170 new laws were enacted across multiple categories. Today, WLAF shares some of the laws relating to education.

HB0061                    

Effective date(s) 07/01/2025          

Amends TCA Title 37 and Title 49. As enacted, specifies that in an educational neglect case a subpoena may be issued for a student’s attendance record, including all previous school years that the student attended a public school, in accordance with relevant privacy laws.

Effective date(s) 07/01/2025           

Amends TCA Title 49. As enacted, authorizes local education agencies and public charter schools to provide up to four days of the required 180 days of classroom instruction via hybrid learning in the event of dangerous or extreme weather conditions, or an emergency, as determined by the director of schools or the director of public charter schools.

Amends TCA Title 49; Title 53; Title 63 and Title 68. As enacted, authorizes a healthcare practitioner to prescribe and a pharmacist to dispense a prescribed, bronchodilator rescue inhaler to an authorized entity to be administered to a person believed to be experiencing asthma symptoms or respiratory distress in an emergency situation, under a standing protocol from the healthcare practitioner; encourages schools in LEAs and public charter schools to keep bronchodilator rescue inhalers to be administered to students believed to be having asthma symptoms or in respiratory distress in an emergency situation.

Amends TCA Title 49. As enacted, requires local boards of education and public charter school governing bodies to adopt a policy to prohibit students from using wireless communication devices during instructional time, except in certain circumstances; makes related changes.

Amends TCA Title 49. As enacted, increases, from 130 minutes per full school week to 40 minutes per school day, the minimum amount of physical activity required for elementary school students; establishes additional requirements for the minimum amount of physical activity required for elementary school students.

Amends TCA Title 49. As introduced, requires the state board of education to approve at least one universal screener for pre-kindergarten students as an alternative growth model to generate individual growth scores for pre-kindergarten teachers; requires, instead of authorizes, LEAs and public charter schools that provide a voluntary pre-kindergarten program to allow pre-kindergarten teachers to use the results of a state-board-approved universal screener for pre- kindergarten students as an alternative growth model for annual evaluation purposes.
