JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- Not even the rain could keep the fun away at the fourth annual Campbell County Special Olympics Track and Field event held at Campbell County High School on Thursday.

More than 80 athletes participated in the event, and despite the weather, there were smiles all around at Reynolds Field, where the Cougars play football. Many kids took advantage of the rain and took some puddle jumping opportunities.

The Caryville Police Department and other law enforcement agencies were on site to hand out medals, and community volunteers turned out in number to help with the event.

Special Olympics Area 14 Director Brandon Johnson said the event went great despite being the first event to be held in the rain and that all the “athletes made the best of it.”

“We made some tough decisions with the weather being what it is, but as difficult as it is to reschedule, we made the decision to go ahead. We have athletes out here playing in the rain puddles and that just really is a living example of what our athletes are like, they’re not going to let a little rain get them away from such an important day; they make the best out of everything, so I am glad we did it,” Johnson said.
Johnson also said he continued to be overwhelmed and humbled by the outpouring of community support for Special Olympics.
