Fairly new text-email scam making its way around Campbell County and the region

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- “I received a Ghost Tap scam text on my phone on Saturday,” said La Follette Chief of Police Matthew Forsyth. The chief cautions you to beware of this scam that could dramatically disrupt your life and finances.

Scammers are attempting to steal your credit card information and load it into a digital wallet. From there, it’s used to buy gift cards which are in turn resold on online platforms to launder stolen money, according to officials.

A text like the one above is trying to make you think it’s from the DMV or you may receive one telling you that you have account issues or a misdelivered package. “Do not click on the text or enter your personal information,” said Chief Forsyth.

“I think it is always a good idea to look at the sender information of the text/email. If it appears to be from a generic address/email address or what appears to look like a personal email address like this one, I immediately begin to think it is possibly a scam. If anyone feels that it may be a scam, please don’t not respond and rather call Law Enforcement if they are not sure,” said LPD Chief Matthew Forsyth.

Law enforcement or government agencies will never ask you to pay a fine or debt with a gift card. They will not ask for private information over the telephone, according to the chief. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-06/06/2025-6AM)
