Wynn’s arch-rival Jellico to play games on Bulldogs homecourt Saturday versus Cosby
By Jim Freeman
HABERSHAM, TN (WLAF)- What on earth would Sterling Ford think? Jellico as the home team at the gym that bears the legendary Wynn coach’s name? Whatever the winningest basketball coach in the history of Campbell County Basketball would think, it’s going to happen. Jellico will play Cosby Saturday afternoon-evening on Wynn’s court.
What could top that? Jellico players wearing Wynn’s white and red uniforms. “This is a way for us to honor all those great teams and players that graced this court. Now days, Wynn serves as a feeder program for Jellico High Basketball,” said long time Jellico Basketball Coach Mike Reynolds.
Though the Jellico-Wynn rivalry has been left to memories, history books and school annuals, it will be revived, sort of, as Jellico, in Wynn jerseys, takes to the court at Ford Gym. The Junior Varsity game tips off 3pm Saturday and will be followed by the Lady Blue Devils (Bulldogs) at 4:30.
After the girls varsity game, close to 6pm, the Wynn District Championship teams will be recognized. That’s the Lady Bulldogs of 1983 and 1984 and the Bulldogs of 1976, 1980, 1982 and 1986. Wynn played in two state tournaments, the Lady Bulldogs in 1983 and the ‘Dogs in 1986.
Wynn had three players that led the state of Tennessee in scoring; Larry Meadows 1970-71, Jerry Walden 1971-72 and Eddie Marlow 1975-76.
As a broadcaster, there are two games, Wynn versus Midway at Coalfield High (1986) and then Jellico (2024) versus University High at Brooks Gym on the ETSU campus, where I had the honor of calling the play-by-play. Both games are so special and memorable to me, because Wynn and Jellico each won advancing to their only state tournament appearances.
“We’re inviting all former Wynn players to come out for this special day of honoring, remembering Wynn High School Basketball. For me, personally, this will bring back a lot of memories, because I attended the Wynn games as a youngster and watched all these great players, many of whom will be here Saturday,” said Coach Reynolds.
