‘I hope I’ve done some good’- Margaret Hatmaker Ayers

Since 2008, Margaret Ayers has served at the La Follette Medical Center

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- “JoAnn Troutman recruited me, and I’ve been here since August 2008,” said Margaret Ayers. “Here” is the Tennova-La Follette Medical Center. The affable Ayers generously invests her time a couple of days a week helping patients and others when they enter the hospital lobby.

Ayers worked for the state for years at the employment security office. Since her retirement from there, she’s been serving her community in many different capacities including helping at the hospital.

Mondays and Tuesdays are the days Ayers serves at the hospital. “I love it,” says Ayers. “I want to help people to have a good experience at the hospital,” said Ayers.

Margaret Ayers with Coats for the Cold guest spoke at the South Campbell County Rotary Club luncheon last November.

One of Ayers first efforts after retirement was hosting a giant coat drive in 2008 after starting Coats for the Cold in 2007. In fact it was so big, the Woodson’s Mall provided space for the drive. “We gave away 2,500 coats that first year,” said Ayers. Ayers Coats for the Cold drive continues and will soon be in full swing for the approaching cold weather season.

She’s also helped at the local food bank, and she’s a regular at promoting the quarterly food give-a-ways at her church, the La Follette Church of God.

Margaret Ayers is a member of the La Follette High School Class of 1954, the first graduating class from the then new high school, now a part of La Follette Middle School.

“This is an opportunity (at LMC). I’m glad I’ve not missed this one. There are so many good folks at La Follette Medical Center,” said Ayers.

She’s also been a staunch campaigner over the years, too. First she helped her late husband J.P. Ayers, the longtime property assessor, and in latter years, she sought votes for her son, Judge Joe Ayers.

“I’ve had such a blessed life, and I want to be a blessing to other people. God’s been so good to me,” said Ayers. So 16 years later, Margaret Ayers is still sharing smiles, encouragement and help to those who cross her path at the La Follette Medical Center.
