Campbell, in white, settles in on defense during Thursday night’s jamboree against state power Greeneville.

JEFFERSON CITY, TN (WLAF)- The Cougars made a trip to Burke-Tarr Stadium on the campus of Carson-Newman University to take part in the 5 Star Preps Jamboree. Their opponent was the Greeneville Greene Devils, a team whose combined record in the past three years is 35 and 3.

Things did not start off well for the Orange-and-Blue. Following a Cougar three-and-out, Greeneville scored on its first play from scrimmage, quickly leading Campbell 7-0. After yet another Cougar offensive stall, it really was not looking great for the Orange-and-Blue; but Luke Lindsay had other plans.

First, Lindsay intercepted a tipped pass which gave Campbell possession of the football at their own thirty. This seemed to kick the Cougars into high gear. Luke Lindsay, now under center following the big defensive play, found Gavin Owens for a 15+ yard gain followed by a big-run by Caden Idles. A Greene Devil personal foul penalty set up Campbell just outside the red zone. Luke and Gavin connected again, with this time Owens making an over-the-top catch in the end zone for six points.

Greeneville put together a long scoring drive to go up 14-7. The Cougars though were putting together a drive of their own that was cut short as time expired, keeping the score at 14-7.

Greeneville edged Campbell Thursday night on Roy Harmon Field.

In the second and final quarter of play, the JV Cougars stepped on the field. The offense was stagnant, but Campbell only allowed one touchdown on defense. Some big hits were also provided from Cougars Ryder Bumgardner and Max Boshears.

This was the final game action before it gets real. Campbell hosts Halls in the first game of the season on Friday, August 23rd at Reynolds Field with kick-off at 7pm.
