JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- At Monday evening’s workshop, county commissioners briefly discussed the possibility of having a vendor install an ATM machine at the county courthouse for use by the citizens.
Commissioner Rusty Orick brought the subject up, about “looking into the legal aspects” of putting an ATM inside the courthouse for the convenience of the public.
Orick said it would be “a long, drawn-out process,” and that it “would not be action for this month.”
Orick said he had talked to County Clerk Todd Nance and that County Attorney Joe Coker was also checking into the process and the state law.
Coker said he had consulted with the County Technical Assistance Service (CTAS) on it and that he had received a response that there was “not anything that would prohibit it” and that there was a state statute that allowed it.
Coker noted that “It would be a contractor or vendor and not the county doing the ATM.”
Orick said that the public had requested it due to credit card machine fees.
“We have a lot of people coming and getting their tags and registering boats, using their credit cards at Bobby Vann’s office, and paying different fees. We don’t charge them, but the credit card company charges them a big percentage, sometimes, $40 or $50 for boats and soon as you tell them that, the first thing they ask is if there is an ATM machine,” Orick said, adding that he didn’t think it would cost the county anything other “than the space for the ATM and a 120 electric outlet.”
Commissioner Beverly Hall said if the county did this, the county needed to have it in a contract that the county “would not be responsible for those machines.”
Coker agreed and said that there would need to be a contract stating that and that the vendor company would be responsible for maintenance, etc. He also said it needed to be noted to the public that any fees the ATM vendor charged to the customer “would not be to the benefit of Campbell County.”
“You would be getting a monthly lease fee, but you would not be getting part of the profit from the machine,” Coker said.
This issue will not be voted on this month but will be brought back up at the October commission workshop. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-09/10/2024-6AM)
