The town’s garbage fee will be on the agenda for the monthly meeting in June

CARYVILE, TN (WLAF)- Thursday night the Caryville Board of Mayor and Aldermen met for a special called meeting. The board discussed the annual operating budget for fiscal year 2025-26. The proposed budget for the town is $3.75 million. Alderman Pat Donahue made a motion to pass the budget, however the motion died for lack of a second.

In June 2024, the board voted to repeal Ordinance 2009-02 and replaced it with Ordinance 2024-07. The ordinance removed the previous garbage collection fee of $8 and changed the fee to $12. However, at the July 2024, monthly meeting Alderman Josh Monday rescinded his motion from the June meeting to raise the garbage fee. At that time, Monday explained that the town had not officially voted on an ordinance to lower the garbage fee in 2009, so the board would need to vote on Ordinance 2024-07 making the $8 fee official before they could do anything else. At that time the ordinance to keep the fee at $8 was approved even though Alderman Lloyd Lawson, Alderman Vickie Heatherly and Alderman Beth Lawson voted no on the motion. Last night the board discussed the garbage fee again. The current fee is $8. Mayor David Chambers is proposing the fee be between $8 and $12. The maximum fee that could be charged is $12. No action was taken on this item, and the garbage fee will be on the agenda for the monthly meeting in June.

The first reading of Ordinance 2025-03 amending the general fund annual operating budget for fiscal year 2025-25 in the amount of $17,200 for engineering services was approved.

In police business the board discussed purchasing a 2025 Dodge Durango to replace the 2022 Durango that was totaled. The cost of the vehicle is $41,600. The police department has a Tennessee Highway Safety Office Grant and requested in April at the regular monthly meeting to purchase two radar guns for the department, however the item was tabled. During the May meeting the board suspended the rules of the meeting to change the wording from purchasing radar guns to purchasing two laptops. The board did not take any action on this matter at that time. Last night the board discussed purchasing the laptops. Both items were tabled until the regular monthly meeting in June.

The board was scheduled to meet on June 9 for the monthly meeting, but the meeting date has been changed to Monday, June 16 at 6 pm. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-05/30/2025-6AM)
