Mayor Beth Lawson nominated Aldermen Josh Monday again to be Caryville’s vice mayor.

CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF)- The Town of Caryville continues without a vice mayor. Monday night at the monthly meeting, the board of mayor and aldermen had the opportunity to vote on a vice mayor. However, when the topic arose on the agenda and Mayor Beth Lawson requested nominations for the position, the room fell silent.

After giving ample time for a nomination, Mayor Lawson nominated Aldermen Josh Monday and waited for a second to the nomination. Monday made the second and the board voted as follows Aldermen Jordan Cross, no, Monday, passed, Aldermen Pat Donahue, yes, Aldermen Vickie Heatherly, no, Aldermen Lloyd Lawson abstained and Aldermen Eric Jones was absent. The motion did not pass.

Last month, Mayor Lawson nominated Monday but did not receive a second. At a workshop last month after the meeting, Heatherly talked about Lloyd Lawson being vice mayor. At that time he stated he was willing to be vice mayor, but he wasn’t willing to sign checks.

Prior to the adjournment of the meeting last night Monday told the board he had talked with Lloyd Lawson recently about the vice mayor position. He then said “what’s going on here is not right, you (the board) are making it impossible to get a vice mayor. Leaving the town without a vice mayor is a shame on every one of us. We’re trying to move the city forward.”

The board approved Resolution 1145 authorizing the rollover of a CD at Builtwell Bank. The CD has earned $12,137.09 which was rolled back into the CD. The annual contract approval with the East Tennessee Development District for $9,734.50 and an ordinance amending the fiscal year 2025-26 budget was approved.

Two capital outlay items were approved as well. The first was the purchase of a new brush truck for $218,495. The town currently has $196,000 in ARPA funds which will be put toward the purchase price and the remaining funds will come from the general funds. Next was an automobile extraction tool for $10,000.
