LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- Boy Scouts of America Troop 310 has a Hurricane Helene Relief Drive in progress for “our neighbors in Newport and the surrounding communities.”

Donation drive bins have been set up at multiple locations across the county including the Veteran’s Affairs Office/County Clerk’s Annex Office in LaFollette, at East LaFollette Baptist Church and West LaFollette Baptist Church, as well as at Smith ACE Hardware in LaFollette and at the People’s Bank of the South in LaFollette and in Jacksboro.

“We want to help our East Tennessee neighbors and do all we can in their time of need; that’s what being a Scout is, helping those when they need it,” said BSA Troop 310 Scout Leader Chris Thacker.

Donations of first aid kits, diapers, wipes, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, non-perishable food and more is being taken over the next two weeks. On Sat., Oct. 19th, the supplies will be delivered and distributed by BSA Scouts in the Newport area.

“A lot of little communities that aren’t being mentioned in the news were hit hard and we’re trying to focus on helping some of those communities,” Thacker said.

The catastrophic flooding hit “close to home” for area Scouts as they have “Scout friends over in Newport area.”

“They are giving us progress reports about what’s going on and donations that are coming in. They are getting lots of water donations and those need to keep coming as well, but they also need other items, especially diapers, cleaning supplies, first aid kits, hygiene items and food. Cody Phillips and I will be delivering the supplies in two weeks,” Thacker said. After that delivery, the needs of those communities will be “assessed”, and local Campbell County Scouts will continue with additional hurricane relief drives.

“Campbell County is pulling together to help people; that’s what we do,” Thacker said. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-10/07/2024-6AM)
