Well wishers came and went through the afternoon, 2-5, to celebrate Margaret Ayers at the La Follette Church of God Gymnasium.

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- Margaret Ayers was celebrated on Saturday afternoon at the La Follette Church of God. The celebration marked her 90th birthday. “They say I’m 90, but I don’t believe it,” laughed Margaret Ayers. Ayers adds that she’s had a blessed life.

“It’s wonderful, but I wouldn’t tell anybody it’s my 90th birthday. Nobody would have guessed it about Margaret. But anyway, happy birthday, Margaret,” said Carolyn Dent.

“And you’re still blessing people,” Dent said. “Well, I’m hoping I’m doing a little bit of good,” said Ayers.

“I’m so happy, so happy to see all my buddies, people I’ve worked with and those I’ve known for ever and ever and those I’m still working with volunteering and all my church friends, it just makes me so happy,” said Ayers. A lot of her family members turned out.

Granddaughter Julia Ayers handled the registry, though her other granddaughter, Molly Ayers had to work.

Pam Olivio, with the church, did all the decorations and worked all week. Helen Bruce Ross coordinated the party along with helpers Brenda Combs and so many attendees made and brought cakes.

Even at 90, Ayers continues to take part in volunteering with events such as food and coats for the cold drives. You’ll also see her each week greeting folks in the lobby at the La Follette Medical Center.

Margaret Hatmaker married J.P. Ayers. They were married for 53 years until his death in 2008.
