LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- Educators make a difference in students’ lives every day. For many students, having a school employee who cares and goes that extra mile can be the difference in a successful education and graduation. We’ve all had that teacher, or school employee who inspired us or helped in some way. That’s why WLAF and Eagle Tire Pros salute all of our hardworking educators with a weekly feature.
This week’s featured educator is Fredia Smith. She is the 6th Grade Hall Custodian at LaFollette Middle School and has worked there for approximately the past 13 years. Coming up at the end of April, Fredia will be retiring to “enjoy spending some more time with her grandbabies.â€

Smith was born and raised in Campbell County in the LaFollette area. She attended “East LaFollette Elementary School, the old Jr. High and CCHS.
Smith started working at LMS around 13 years ago. During that time, the teachers on the 6th Grade Hall where she works have “become like family to her.â€
“I tell all the teachers on that hall that they are like my kids; I’m going to miss them when I retire,†Smith said. She also said she will miss “interacting with the kidsâ€, which is one of the favorite parts about working at LMS.
“Some of the kids are rotten and some are so sweet; I’m going to miss all of them too. I enjoy being around the kids; they have kept me young,†Smith said.
She also said she loves working with her co-workers.

“They are all wonderful; we really are like a family at LMS, it’s a great environment. I really enjoyed my time there and had a great experience. I could not have asked for a better place to work,†Smith said.
After she retires, she said she plans “to rest for a while, then kick it into high gear†and enjoy time with family and grandchildren.
Every Thursday, WLAF’s Charlotte Underwood features the WLAF – Eagle Tire Pros teacher of the week. That educator also receives a free oil change from Eagle Tire Pros.
