Heritage is one of the state’s top teams in 3-A basketball and wins 52 to 36 over 4-A Campbell

MARYVILLE, TN (WLAF)- The Lady Cougars had a tough test awaiting them on Monday. That test was the #2 ranked team in the state, the Heritage Lady Mountaineers. Watch all the action of Lady Cougar Basketball HERE.

Although the Lady Cougars lost by 16, it felt like a much closer game than that. After the first quarter, the Lady Cougars led 13-12. However, Heritage showed why it’s a highly ranked team in all of Tennessee. The Lady Mountaineers aggressive defense really settled in later in the game.

Another thing not helping the Lady Cougars was the free throw disparity. At one point Heritage shot 12 free throws to Campbell’s zero. At the end of the game, the foul shot count was 16 to 6 in favor of Heritage.

However, at the final horn, it was Heritage’s excellent play that propelled it to the 52-36 victory.

Head Coach Jason Kitts was proud of his team. He said that though, with a loss early, his team can learn a lot from it. Kitts said that playing this game, a very physical contest with constant pressing from Heritage, will get his team ready for the best teams in district play, when the games matter most.

Leading in scoring was Lacey Pemberton, the Mills Door and More Player of the Game. Pemberton finished with 13 points on the night. Behind her was Bella Lester with eight points. Saylor Hutcheson scored four. Preslee Chapman, Carley Kitts, and Jayden Kitts all scored three points. Destiny Rutherford rounded out the scoring for Campbell with two points.

It’s a quick turnaround as Campbell hosts Oneida tonight. The Lady Cougars and Lady Indians tip at 6pm. 1. I was very proud of the lady cougars last night. Eventhough they lost, they never quit and fought hard against a very tough, physical team.
