Call for help from remote area of the county came in to Central Dispatch at 3:14am Sunday

CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF)- One man was rescued while the body of another man was recovered from the Red Ash area of Caryville called Sand Quarry Mountain. The report coming into WLAF from one official is that a UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) drove off a sand cliff late Saturday night in a very rough part of the mountain.

The drop from the cliff is about 100feet, and the wrecked happened around 10pm Saturday, one first responder estimated.

A National Guard Helicopter arrived on the scene at 8:28am Sunday, according to 911. One man died at the scene, according to officials.

All those who answered the call drove up a distance from Old Highway 63 at Red Ash and had to finish their trek to the scene on foot.

However, a couple of members of the La Follette Rescue Squad were able to make it up the mountain on an ATV though they did have to use winch to make it across a couple of rock piles. The men, thought to be from the La Follette area, are in their 30s.

Sand Quarry Mountain is the prominent mountain than can be seen straight ahead traveling north down the hill into Caryville on I-75. Responding agencies include Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, EMS and EMA, LRS, TWRA and National Guard. The last unit out cleared the scene around 12:30pm Sunday.

  1. Guys, this is happening all over the country at an alarming rate. The machines we ride are incredibly powerful and more capable than ever. I began riding in the 1970’s when the first all terrain cycle was introduced, the Honda ATC 90. PLEASE, let’s slow down, police one another, and ride responsibly. My deepest sympathy goes out to the families of all who have perished in these tragic wrecks.
