CAMPBELL COUNTY, TN. (WLAF)- Teachers make a difference in their students’ lives every day. For many students, having a teacher who cares and goes that extra mile can be the difference in a successful education and graduation. We’ve all had that teacher who inspired us or helped in some way. That’s why WLAF and Eagle Tire Pros salute all of our hard-working educators with a weekly feature.

This week’s featured teacher is Tammy Sheffler. She teaches English Language Arts at Valley View Elementary School.

When she’s not teaching, Sheffler enjoys camping, hiking, traveling, cooking, and reading.  

Sheffler was born and raised in a small community outside Beckley, West Virginia and has spent a great deal of her life in Appalachia.

“I went to college at Marshall University where I graduated with a master’s degree in secondary social science education. I spent time as a military spouse (Air Force), so I have taught in WV, California, and Florida,” Sheffler said.

She currently teaches 5th Grade English Language Arts at Valley View Elementary School.

“Between my time in Florida and here, I have spent almost 10 years in 5th Grade, which is my absolute favorite age to teach.  However, I have also taught high school, 3rd Grade, and special education,” Sheffler said. 

She was inspired to follow a career in education by her mother, who taught kindergarten for 30 plus years. 

“Additionally, I had several memorable teachers in elementary school that modeled the type of teacher I wanted to be, including Mrs. Nancy Kittle,” Sheffler said.

Her favorite part of the job is “getting to know my students and finding ways to inspire them to enjoy reading as much as I do.”
