City of LaFollette meets in workshop session
LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Yesterday afternoon, the LaFollette City Council met and discussed the possibility of having food truck rallies throughout the summer. Mayor Cliff Jennings stated that he would like to have some tailgating events during football season where people could watch the ballgame and tailgate.
Two bids were received for emergency sirens. The first bid was from Federal Signal Corporation and was the lowest bid. The second bid was from Sirens from Cities and included a $20,000 yearly service for being connected to the National Weather Service. With the first bid connectivity to the National Weather Service was included. At the monthly meeting next Tuesday, the council will vote on whether to accept the bid or not on the E911 center renovation. City Administrator Stan Foust reported that this is standard procedure. The bid from Creative Structures for $649,495 has already been accepted by the E911 board.
Councilman Chuck Queener would like to have a traffic study conducted on the traffic lights. Foust reported that TDOT had started the process for the traffic study.
The council will vote at the regular monthly meeting in May on whether to declare portable radios from the fire department as surplus or not. If declared as surplus, they will be donated to the White Oak Volunteer Fire Department.
Mayor Jennings suggested since the city is having issues hiring officers, they could look into recruiting some of the upcoming high school graduates. He suggested that the city would pay the cost of their training in return the individual would work for the city for a selected amount of time. Police Chief Steve Wallen told Jennings that he would work on this.
Jennings would like to start work on the Del Rio Complex for the public works department. Foust requested they discuss the matter at next month’s meeting when they can have some more information available on the complex.
The recreation department needs to purchase a new mower, and it currently has a 2010 John Deere that is starting to have issues. Recreation Director Johnny Byrge told the council he could trade the mower for $6,000 and would need $10,000 for the purchase of a new mower. The council will vote on the purchase at the monthly meeting.
