HALLS, TN (WLAF) – Your Campbell Cougars traveled to Halls on Monday night to duel the Red Devils, a team that defeated the Orange-and-Blue 66-57 on Brown Court earlier in the year.
Halls and Campbell traded blows early. Jake Hatmaker and Luke Browning got Campbell on the board with some quick threes, and the Cougars were knotted with Halls at 10 five minutes into the first quarter. Tyler Kitts drilled a deep ball to put the Orange-and-Blue on top 13-12. After the offense-heavy first quarter, Campbell trailed the Red Devils 21-16.
In the second quarter, the Cougars fell behind Halls 26-18. At this point though, Campbell’s offense ignited to outscore Halls 11-0 in the next three minutes. This run, due mostly in part to six straight points from Gavin Cox, gave Campbell a 29-28 lead. At the mid-game break, Halls jumped back in front 33-30.
Luke Browning got the second half fun started by draining a three ball to tie the game at 33. Then Jordan Day hit a three of his own to give Campbell the 36-33 lead. Keegan Nelson and Gavin Cox sank some critical baskets late in the third to put Campbell on top at the end of the quarter 49-48.
Halls started off the fourth quarter strong, jumping out to a 59-53 lead with 4:39 to go in the game.
With over three minutes to go, Halls further expanded their lead to nine. Campbell was unable to catch up in the remaining minutes. The Red Devils handed Campbell their fifth loss in a row, 75-60.
Gavin Cox was the top scorer for Campbell County with 15 points. Luke Browning racked up 13 points on the night. Nine points came from both Tyler Kitts and Keegan Nelson, your Local Realtor Gage Dople Player of the Game.. Jake Hatmaker scored eight points. Jordan Day and Will Croley had three points apice. Cole Miller and Dylan Ford saw action, but did not score.
Campbell falls to 7 and 16 on the year, with a 1 and 7 record in District 3 (4-A).
The Cougars do not have much time to rest as they are back in action Tuesday at Central. The Lady Cougars tip at 6pm and the varsity Cougars play at 7:30.
