Chris Chitwood, with the State Forestry Service, noted that Friday was the first day you could burn statewide without a burn permit except in some municipalities like La Follette. You need to have a burn permit year around in La Follette. Statewide, you must have a burn permit from Oct. 15 to May 15. Chitwood notes that there are only three things you can legally burn in Tennessee, brush, leaves and untreated or unpainted lumber.
