Campbell advances to 6-9 with victory against the Indians

By Clayton Carroll

JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – The Cougars, not having played a basketball game since December 21st, looked to defend John Brown Court against the Oneida Indians on Tuesday night.

Oneida started off hot, quickly jumping ahead of the Cougars 12-0 in the first four minutes. Luke Browning put the Cougars on the board with a long shot. Following that Browning bucket, Campbell proceeded to outpace the Indians 7-6 in the remainder of the quarter. After one quarter, the Cougars trailed the Indians 18-10.

In the second quarter, Campbell stormed out of the gate, coming back to knot the game at 21 with a little more than three and a half minutes to go in the second quarter. Oneida, however, would regain the lead 34-28 heading into the mid-game break.

The second half was possibly the most entertaining half of Cougar basketball all season. The fireworks began with a technical foul called on Head Coach Ernie Clawson. This ignited a fire for the Orange-and-Blue as Campbell would charge back to tie the game at 57 thanks to some critical Gabe St. John, Luke Browning, and Jake Hatmaker treys.

With 3:46 to go in the game, Gavin Cox would knock down a free throw to put Campbell ahead of Oneida 58-57. Campbell added to its lead throughout the remainder of the contest, defeating the Indians 69-62.

Gavin Cox totaled the most points for the Orange-and-Blue with 17. Logan Day, your Local Realtor Gage Dople Player of the Game, finished just behind Cox with 16. Luke Browning scored 12. Jake Hatmaker racked up seven. Gabe St John and Jordan Day scored six points apiece, and Tyler Kitts rounded out the scoring column with five points.

Up next for the Orange-and-Blue is a tussle with the not-so-friendly-foe that is Anderson County. The Lady Cougars and Cougars travel to Clinton to battle the Mavericks on Friday. Coverage begins at 6pm over the WLAF Doyle’s Tire Sports Network which consists of radio AM 1450, FM 100.9, TV channel 1089, YouTube, Facebook, Roku TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Twitch.
