LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – On a beautiful, breezy day, 70 volunteers filled up a large portion of the parking lot at the Food City Center to build beds. This first bed build of the season in Campbell County was sponsored by the Lions Club, New Horizon Baptist Church and Cross-Smith Funeral Home.

Entering Saturday’s bed build, there was a need for 29 beds, and that need was met as 40 beds were built in under three hours.

By 10am Saturday, after a 9am start, the truck holding all of the lumber for the day’s bed build was half empty.
The next step is cutting the material to different lengths.
Several volunteers are needed for this next step, sanding. This much lumber takes a lot of sanding.
Next is the tapping stage.  There are certain cuts tapped for the next step.
Every place there is a tap mark, a hole will be drilled.
Part of the bed build is the platform for the mattress.
Installing the strapping is this next step. That holds the bedding.
Assembling the head three-foot board is what’s going on here.

The Sleep in Heavenly Peace brand goes on every bed.
The brand is in place, and now it’s on to the stain.
Staining the finished product.

Since Bill Thompson started the Campbell County Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace in December 2018, 1,046 beds have been built. Connect HERE or call 407.678.2638 for more information. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 04/03/2023-6AM)
