LAFOLLETTE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – While Campbell High hosted the 1A, 2A and 3A Middle School State Championships Saturday on Reynolds Field, where no local teams participated, there were Volunteer Football League (VFL) playoffs on the other end of town on Kerr Field at La Follette Middle School.
There are eight teams in the VFL. In the North Division, Lake City, Campbell, NAGAF and Union make up that side. It’s Norwood, Scott County Cumberland Gap and Clinton in the South Division.
Those teams that made the playoffs were all at LMS this past Saturday.
The young Campbell Cougars were involved in two of the three age groups, the JV Hoppers and the Hoppers.
Up first, Cumberland Gap played NAGAF with Cumberland Gap winning that one.
In game two, the Cougars JV Hopper team took on Coalfield, and the Cougars had their way in the first half with a 14 – 0 advantage, but Coalfield came alive in the second half, and before you knew it, it was all tied up, and they went into overtime.
Coalfield failed to score in the extra period, and the Cougars took over throwing a swing pass out to the left side, and it went for about 40 yards for the winning score. That was your ballgame as the Cougars won 20 – 14 to advance to this Saturday’s championship. The VFL JV Hopper title game kicks off at 3pm as the Cougar JV Hoppers will battle Cumberland Gap.
In the other game involving the young Cougars, Hopper Division, NAGAF was just too strong on this day and won big.
It was a full day of football on Oct. 29:
11:00 JV Hoppers / Cumberland Gap vs. NAGAF
12:30 JV Hoppers / Campbell County vs. Coalfield
2:00 Hoppers / Coalfield vs. Scott
3:30 Hoppers / Campbell vs. NAGAF
5:00 Cutters / Scott vs. Lake City or Coalfield
6:30 Cutters / NAGAF vs. Norwood
