According to Campbell CTE Director Traci Chambers, competitions such as these are a “great experience for the students, teaching leadership skills and building confidence.”

“It gets the kids involved, and it also has a real-world scenario to it that will help them later in life,” Chambers said, adding that competitions like this “also build soft skills” such as creativity, teamwork, adaptability, and problem solving.

Jellico Construction teacher Jay Davis said the event was “great fun for his kids” and a “confidence building tool.”

“It’s like a ball game or any other competition; it gives them practice and confidence to compete against their peers,” Davis said.

Campbell County High School CTE Coach Josh Parker said the competition showcased the talents of both schools and allowed CCHS and JHS to show off “the hidden gems” of the CTE programs.

“Jellico High School and Campbell County have great programs that are cranking out ready workers for these industries. There’s a lot of exciting programs at our schools,” Parker said.

Students from CCHS and Jellico competed on Thursday in various CTE competitions, including construction, culinary arts, cosmetology and nursing.

Campbell County High School Principal Ben Foust said it was “always good to get the two-area high schools together for projects and competitions.”

“Competitions build experience for these kids and keeps them excited about their programs,” Foust said.

Campbell County Cosmetology Instructor Connie Crutchfield said her students did great and that this local competition helps students get ready for other competitions at the regional and state level.

CCHS’s Cosmetology group participated in Thursday’s CTE competition.

“It builds self-confidence. All the kids did great, Jellico and Campbell County alike. Competitions like this between the two schools make us interact as a community. Some of these kids from both sides of the mountain will end up working side by side later in life, ” Crutchfield said.

Jellico High school CTE Coach Lisa Bolton said it was a good opportunity for the students to show their skills to their peers and to compare their skills against others.

“It’s a great learning opportunity and the kids have had a blast.  We’re so excited and thankful to have these opportunities available for our students,” Bolton said. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 04/26/2024-6AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF WLAF’S JOSH PARKER)
