Come to Town of Jacksboro meeting Thu., Oct. 3, at 6pm, to support Campbell County Girl Scouts

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- Campbell County Girl Scouts have written a proposal requesting the installation of crosswalks and traffic lights at Campbell County High School, Jacksboro Middle School and LaFollette Middle School. The Girl Scouts will present this proposal to the Jacksboro Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Thursday Oct. 3rd at 6 pm and to the LaFollette City Council at its workshop on Oct. 30th.

Campbell County Girl Scouts Service Unit Leader and Manager Jene Hopkins along with the Scouts are asking for “everyone to come to the Town of Jacksboro meeting Thursday, Oct. 3rd, at 6pm, to support the Campbell County Girl Scouts who will be presenting their proposal to get crosswalks put in at LMS, CCHS, and JMS.”

The Scouts, who are all “middle-school aged” have been working on the proposal over the last two months.

According to Hopkins, State Representative Dennis Powers said he “would work on applying for a grant for the projects if the Scouts worked out the proposal.”

The proposal contains important statistics and data reasoning why crosswalks and traffic safety lights are important and “much needed” at all three schools in the county.

The full proposal the Girl Scouts will present is included below:

“Today, I want to talk about something really important, why schools need crosswalks.

First of all, more than 70% of drivers were found speeding in school zones. Crosswalks help us cross the road safely, which means we can focus on enjoying our walk instead of worrying about cars zooming past. More than 80% of pedestrians die when hit at 40 miles per hour or faster on the other hand, less than 10% die when hit a car traveling at 20 miles per hour or less.

Secondly, a 2017 analysis shows 9.6% of students in the United States usually walk to school and 1.1 bike to school. With a crosswalk we children can see when to cross the road and drivers know when to drive. Crossing some place other than an intersection accounts for more than 70% of pedestrian death.

As Girl scouts our goal is to make the world a better place, and that means to add crosswalks to schools. The schools we plan on adding crosswalks to are Campbell County high school, Jacksboro middle school, and Lafollette middle school. For the High school we will place the crosswalks from the corner of Appalachian Highway across Jacksboro Pike to the corner of the Lafollette Church of God. The crosswalk will be white and there will be a traffic light from Campbell County Comprehension high school to Brad’s Kar Care.

Jacksboro middle school will have a traffic light and white crosswalk from the corner of Eagle circle across Appalachian Highway to the corner of School Street. Lastly Lafollette middle school will have a traffic light and white crosswalk from LMS across to Faith Way Assembly of God in which there should be a pedestrian Hybrid Beacon.

The crosswalk will be open from about 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. until 5:30m p.m. Due to after school and sports.

In conclusion, crosswalks ensure a child’s safety and make it easier for children to understand when to cross.”

  1. I’m all in favor of making the schools as safe as possible. I don’t agree with adding more stop lights. We have so many lights now that it’s a nightmare just getting through town. Plus the one’s we have don’t work correctly. There is a big traffic problem in our towns as is. Something that is in effect at school time in the morning and dismissal of the evening would be a better option.
