JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- As soon as you walked onto the front lawn of the courthouse, you couldn’t help but notice the White family at Monday’s Memorial Day ceremony. They were all gathered around a huge concrete picnic table.

“We’re here for him, and Joyce White pointed to the tall man in sunglasses holding the flag of the U-S Marine Corp as a member of the Campbell County Honor Guard,” said Joyce White. She was talking about her husband James White. “Oh, you’d better say Jim, because no one knows his as James,” said Joyce White, wife of the retired U-S Army Sergeant First Class.
On one particular stop at the long ago famous Snack Bar, Jim came away with more than a burger and fries. A side of romance came with the little red tray when Joyce delivered his order. It was about 60 years ago when the girl from Caryville met the soldier from Jacksboro at the Snack Bar which once sat up snug to the four lane on the west end of La Follette.
Upon graduation from Jacksboro High School in 1964, Jim White immediately swapped his cap and gown for an Army uniform and began serving his country. “He was a career man retiring in the 1990s after the usual military stops a solider makes with his family over the years,” said Joyce White. A tour of duty in Vietnam was among those stops along with a lot of time also spent in Germany.

Besides James and Jim, the veteran is also known as Dad and Grandpa. Jim and Joyce are the proud parents of Jimmy, Jeff and Angelia.
Thank you for your service Jim White, and we’ll look to see you and your family again on Veterans Day on the front lawn of the courthouse. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-05/27/2025-6AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF WLAF’s CHARLIE HUTSON)
