Special called meeting to vote on first reading of new budget needs to be set

CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF)- On Thursday afternoon, the Caryville Board of Mayor and Aldermen met in a special called workshop to discuss the 2026-27 budget with Aldermen Josh Monday and Aldermen Jordan Cross absent. The only item on the agenda was to discuss personnel pay. The workshop lasted approximately two hours.
At the last workshop, the board appeared to be in agreement with a three percent raise across the board for the town’s employees. However that was not the case, the board failed to pass a first reading of the budget at the regular monthly meeting.
At the workshop on Thursday night, salaries for each department were discussed, and the board appeared to agree until it came to the position of administrative assistant/court clerk. The board discussed the fact that the employee who was in this position received a raise in March 2025 due to taking on the temporary role of town recorder due to the role becoming vacant. The raise was an additional ten percent to her hourly wage. The raise was meant to be temporary while she was filling in for the town recorder who had resigned, according to the board. In March 2026, the position was filled and she returned to her original position but continued to receive the raise.
The discussion centered around whether she should continue to receive the additional ten percent or return to her original salary. Members of the board expressed their gratitude that she had been willing to step in and take over the duties of town recorder.
After the lengthy discussion, the board decided she would go back to her original salary and would receive a three percent raise.
After making this change to the budget, the board will now need to have a special called meeting to vote on the first reading of the budget.
The date of the meeting has not been announced yet. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-05/18/2026-6AM)
