JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- On Friday morning, the Campbell, Morgan, and Blount County chapter of the Special Olympics hosted the third annual track-and-field event at Campbell County High School.

The event began with the Tennessee Highway Patrol Troopers leading the Special Olympics athletes from all area schools in a parade around the track.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Troopers were out in front in the parade carrying the opening ceremony torch.

Following this, athletes Bill Hicks and Jayden Wright led athletes, volunteers, and spectators in the Pledge of Allegiance. Then, Bill hyped up the crowd just a little more.

Eighty-two participated in three different challenges, a 50 meter and 100 meter run and a softball toss.

Receiving Special Olympics medals are athletes Joshua, Paul, and Will.

Then, after each athlete participated in those three events, each received a medal, and depending on the finish in their performance, stand on the victory podium.

“We’re so thankful for the partnership we have with the school system to put on these great events for these athletes,” said Brandon Johnson, the engine that makes the Special Olympics events run. “It’s awesome to be able to have the ability make these athletes feel included and give them this opportunity.”

Special Olympian Gael Hernandez celebrates his first place finish.

The event, without question, was quite the success. Eighty-two athletes from all area schools participated with mostly high school student volunteers helping out, making the third track-and-field event fun and exciting for all who participated. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-05/05/2025-6AM)
