JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- Several BSA Scout leaders attended Monday’s commission meeting to present the upcoming Scout Pinewood Derby which is March 1 at 3 pm at the West End Community Center.
Cub Scout leader Bethany Benjamin, along with Scout leaders Chris and Stewart Thacker spoke about the upcoming race and asked if the commissioners could add the event to the county’s website page.
“We have a huge event coming up March 1st, it is a county-wide Pinewood Derby. We have people coming down from Claiborne and Union County to participate. It is not only for our cub scouts which are elementary-aged kids, but it is also for our middle school and high school aged kids. We are also having adult races, so if any adults want to build one of these awesome cars and race it down a track, we would love to have you there,” Benjamin said.
The Pinewood Derby is the wood car racing event of the Cub Scout Program of BSA Scouts.
Pinewood Derby cars must be built with and according to the rules of the official BSA Derby Car Kit.
“Each kid has been given a car kit … they will each get one of our Pinewood Derby patches too,” Benjamin said. She also thanked Scout Leader Chris Thacker for his help.
“We have been blessed because this hit at a time where everyone could get the juices flowing. We have the LA Cruizers on board, they’re going to bring the real hot rods out and set up and have a car show on the outside. Several of them are building cars themselves. We have the adult class as well, we want to get the parents involved with this as well,” Thacker said.
Commissioner Chair Johnny Bruce thanked scout leaders for all they do in the county and for their roles at presenting the colors at the monthly Veteran’s Breakfasts.
Campbell County’s Pinewood Derby hosted by BSA Packs and Troops will be held March 1st, at 3 pm at the West End Community Center, at 300 West Beech Street in LaFollette. Check in for the race at 2:30 pm.
There will be races, crafts, demonstrations, food and more at the event!
The upcoming Pinewood Derby is a great opportunity to get your kid into scouting, according to Benjamin, who said they still had plenty of car kits left for those who want to sign up for the event and build a car for the big race.
