NASHVILLE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF)- Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee called a special session regarding the Education Freedom Act (school vouchers). The session began on Monday and continues this afternoon. State Rep. Dennis Powers is sharing an update.
The Education Freedom Act is up for a vote in the state legislature possibly this week. “We are getting a lot of calls and emails regarding the education bill that is currently being considered,” said the veteran State Representative.
Here is some updated information surrounding the Education Freedom Act. “I hope everyone will read it and know that we are trying to give parents choices about their child’s education while protecting our public schools,” said Powers. When asked if he is planning to vote for the voucher bill, Powers said “yes.”

A yes vote obviously is not representative of his Constituents nor Campbell and Union Counties elected officials who have formally expressed their positions.
I agree with Mr. Heatherly. Representative Powers should consider listening to those he represents instead of the leadership in Nashville, or Crossville for that matter. Parents always have a choice about their children’s education, and as I read the bill, it mostly benefits those already using private schools. The propaganda above says that “99% of parents are satisfied with the program”. Well, I would be happy too if the State of Tennessee gave me $7000, with no accountability.
You are exactly correct, Bill. This voucher system will benefit the people already sending (and affording) their kids to private schools. I would also like to be given $7000 with no accountability.
I believe those opposed to letting parents have a choice in their children’s education are a very vocal minority. Those who support this bill are happy to let those who choose to leave their children in the school of their choice do so. Choice and competition is always good. Let parents have a say in what quality of education they want for their children. Thank you Rep. Powers for standing for parent’s rights.
I don’t vote for Powers for just this reason. It would be nice to have a representative who actually did represent and not one who voted for the current administration. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. Dress this Bill up and it’s still benefitting the wealthier people and none of the poor. If this state has that kind of extra money laying around, use it to improve the current school systems.
