Caryville Police Officer makes arrest after 1am Thursday

CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF)- Caryville Police Officer Furguson responded to the call of a possible intoxicated driver at the Shell Gas Station. On his way at 1:02am Thursday, dispatch told him the silver Toyota 4Runner left the Shell heading toward Jacksboro.

Furguson caught up with the Toyota observing the 2012 4Runner allegedly not being able to maintain lane crossing over the fog line multiple times. The driver of the Toyota, later identified as Alaina McCarty, turned onto Queener Road where Patrolman Furguson made a traffic stop.

As Officer Furguson made contact with McCarty, he noticed her speech was slurred, and he could smell alcohol, according to the police report. McCarty was asked to get out of the 4Runner, and she did though she was allegedly not steady on her feet.

McCarty, 31, of 272 Sunflower Lane, La Follette, refused to perform a field sobriety test and was advised that, as a result, she would be placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. She was then placed under arrest. McCarty would not follow instructions when told to sit in the police cruiser and would stiffen up and try to pull away, based on the report.

Officer Furguson inventoried the Toyota before being towed and discovered a small bag of a crystal-like substance in the passenger floor board. McCarty was then transported to the Campbell County Jail where she allegedly refused to sign the implied consent form.

A search warrant was obtained by Patrolman Furguson for a blood draw on McCarty. At 4:40am is when the draw was administered, and McCarty was charged with DUI, possession of schedule I, resisting, refused implied consent and failure to maintain lane. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-10/25/2024-6AM)
