CAMPBELL COUNTY, TN (WLAF)- The unsecured load law or Sgt. Chris Jenkins Law is a Class C misdemeanor subject to fine. However, should someone get hurt from it, it can lead to a Class A misdemeanor and jail time. That’s reason enough to tarp and secure loads from trucks and trailers.

On Thursday at the Campbell County Recycle Center on Towe String Road and Friday at the Oswego Convenience Center at Newcomb, Campbell County Litter Control Officer Glennis Monday will be giving away free tarps. Monday will start the give-a-way at each location at 9am and will be there until the supply runs out. It’s a first come, first served event with each vehicle receiving one free tarp that help keep Campbell County roads clean and litter free.

Monday’s event is made possible by the Campbell County Sheriff’s Litter Control, Keep Tennessee Beautiful and the Great American Clean-up.

“Most of the litter and material that’s littering our roadways come from untarped or unsecured loads of material falling from untarped loads from trucks and trailers,” said Monday.

The Sgt. Chris Jenkins Law is named after former Loudon County Deputy Chris Jenkins. In 2022, Jenkins died in the line of duty while retrieving a ladder off I-75 when he was hit and killed by a passing vehicle.
