Campbell Cougars 69 Beavers 64

KNOXVILLE, TN (WLAF) – The three-seeded Campbell Cougars traveled to Karns on Friday night to battle the Beavers in the first round of the district 3 AAAA tournament, and to clinch a region tournament bid.
Jake Hatmaker scored the first points of the night two minutes into the game, draining a long three. It was evident that both teams had been out of school for a couple days, as the first quarter was a sloppy one. The Orange-and-Blue did lead at the end of the first by a score of 12-7.
The Cougars went on a run in the second quarter, extending their lead to eight midway through the quarter. Karns, however, countered with a run of its own. At halftime, it was Campbell hanging on to a narrow 26-25 lead.
The third quarter continued to be a back-and-forth battle. The Orange-and-Blue extended their lead by three points throughout the third quarter. After three, the Cougars led Karns 47-43.
With just under five minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Orange-and-Blue extended their lead to eight, 56-48. Further in to the frame, Campbell extended its lead to the largest margin, ten points. Karns would not quit, quickly cutting the Cougar lead down to six.
Despite Karns chopping it to three, the Cougar lead would get no smaller. The Cougars scraped by with a 69-64 victory.
This win for Campbell County did two things. First, it clinched a spot in the semifinal of the district tournament. It also guaranteed the Cougars a region tournament game for the first time since the 2021-2022 season.
Tops in scoring was Jake Hatmaker with 18 points. Gavin Owens finished just behind him with 17 points. Both were your Mills Door and More Player of the Game. Luke Browning totaled 13 points on the evening. Will Croley scored 12 points. Gavin Cox totaled seven points. Keegan Nelson, in his first game back from a concussion injury, rounded out the score book with two points.
Campbell advances to the semifinal of the tournament where they will play Powell. The Cougars and Panthers tip on Saturday at 7:30pm from Karns High School.
