JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – The Cougar basketball team is in the heat of summer workouts and scrimmages.  On Saturday morning, the Orange-and-Blue picked up valuable reps on its home floor.

Campbell County competed against CAK at 9:30 am, followed by Rhea County at 11:30 am. These two matchups featured two 22-minute halves with a running clock. The Cougars split the day, falling to CAK 50-41, then defeating Rhea 40-26.

“The lower-scoring games are going to benefit us. If we are in the summer and giving up 70 points a game, then that will hurt us. I don’t care how we win, and my team is of the same mindset,” said Coach Brad Honeycutt.

In the Cougars’ win, Hunter Dotson and Braydon Gosnell performed well, scoring 19 points and 9 points, respectively. “That’s extremely encouraging,” said Coach Brad Honeycutt in his first season at the helm of the Cougars. “That’s got to be a summer high for Dotson, and Gosnell has had nine to ten points a couple of times. It’s great to see these guys stepping up.”

Coach Honeycutt, like every coach, obviously enjoys winning. However, that’s not his main goal in summer basketball. “The main thing that I look at in summer ball…the biggest benefit that I see in these summer scrimmages is the team bonding,” Honeycutt mentioned. “Sometimes there are a couple of hours in between games where these guys are just getting to be around each other in a laid-back setting, which helps our team get tighter.

Honeycutt also talked about how these summer scrimmages help him coach his team better. “Some players you need to jump onto, and others will be motivated by a pat on the back. Summer ball gives me that opportunity to really get to know these kids more.”

The JV Cougars also battled Rhea County, falling to the Eagles 54-47.

The Cougars will continue to get reps and workouts in throughout the summer all leading up to the 2026-2027 basketball season. It’ll be Brad Honycutt’s first season in charge of the Cougars and Jason Kitts’s sixth leading the Lady Cougars.
