CAMPBELL COUNTY, TN. (WLAF)- Frigid weather will be around a few more days. When the temperatures drop taking care of your car takes on a new meaning.

BATTERIES

A car’s battery can be affected which can lead to potential issues. Temperatures below 32 degrees can making it challenging to start the car. One of the best ways to prevent battery problems in cold weather is starting the car allowing the engine to run idle for a few minutes before driving. This allows the battery to warm up and ensures that all components are functioning properly.

TIRE PRESSURE

Cold weather can have an impact on tire pressure. As temperatures fall, tire pressure tends to decrease, which can lead to underinflated tires. To avoid this, regularly check tire pressure during the winter months.  Driving with underinflated tires can have consequences. It not only affects the vehicle’s fuel efficiency but also compromises safety on the road. Underinflated tires can lead to reduced traction and control, particularly on wet roads, increasing the risk of accidents.

OIL AND OTHER FLUIDS

The viscosity of oil needs to be monitored when it gets cold. Thick oil can hinder proper lubrication and cause damage to engine components. To stop this use a low-viscosity oil, such as fully synthetic oil. These oils are specifically designed to maintain their fluidity even in frigid temperatures, offering better protection for your engine during the winter months.

Other fluids, such as transmission fluid, antifreeze, and wiper fluid, can also experience thickening, potentially impacting performance. Before cold weather arrives check and change these fluids.

Frozen fuel lines can be concern. To prevent this keep the gas tank at least half full at all times. This reduces the presence of moisture and decreases the risk of fuel line blockages. Regularly topping off the gas tank and avoiding running on low fuel can prevent the inconvenience and potential hazards associated with frozen fuel lines.

WINDSHIELDS

Frozen windshields can also present as an issue in cold weather. A commercial deicer is advised to clear windshields. To avoid a frozen windshield, cover it the night before. Anything from a towel to a large piece of cardboard can be utilized.

Pour boiling hot or freezing cold water or using an ice melt product is not advised. Both can cause substantial damage to the windshield.
