Cougars move on from Seymour scrimmage to Knox, Kentucky, on Aug. 7

SEYMOUR, TN (WLAF)- The Campbell County Cougars traveled to Seymour Friday for the first scrimmage of 2026. Although this team is fairly young, there were major signs of improvement on the offensive side of the ball. Offensive Coordinator Tyler Drummer brought out his troops in the pistol formation which set up nicely for the Cougars to move the ball effectively.

Although no points were put on the board, quarterback Silas Weaver was able to find receivers to move the ball across the 50 yard line on multiple drives. Head Coach Taylor Ownbey said in an interview after the game, “We have guys that can make plays. It’s just about executing those plays and finishing those drives. When we get down inside the red zone, we have to score.”

Senior wide receivers Sam Sexton and Lucas Ornellas did not play in the scrimmage due to minor injuries.

The defensive side of the ball was a struggle for the Cougars most notably with the front seven. When asked about areas of improvement, Coach Ownbey sternly said, “We need to tackle. That was not a good Cougar defense as far as tackling goes. We are in the spot, ready to make a play, and we just miss the tackle.” 

Coach Ownbey said that tackling will be a major point of emphasis this week as the team prepares to take on Knox Central of Barbourville, Kentucky, in its next scrimmage coming up Friday.  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-08/03/2026-6AM)
