JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- Campbell County Board of Education members approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the school district and Special Olympics to become a Unified Champions School district by participating in the proposed program.

Board of Education member Brandon Johnson abstained from voting as he serves on the board with Special Olympics Tennessee. He did field questions about the MOU and clarified the program would “be at no cost to the county school system” and that it would instead provide funding to the schools for the program, along with “stipends for educators.”

“It will be at no cost to the school system, that is actually money that we will get from Special Olympics to implement the program. We are hoping for a three-year program, but of course, as per our policies we can only do this on a year-by-year basis, but not only it is going to put money in our schools, but it is also going to lead to a stipend from Special Olympics for our educators and it’s a really great program,” Johnson said.

Board of education members also approved a Memorandum of Agreement between the Campbell County Schools and the Scott County Detention Center, as well as a memorandum of agreement with the Campbell County Detention Center.

In other business, painting bids were approved for LaFollette Middle School Gymnasium and Wynn School Gymnasium and a State Special Education Pre-school grant was approved.

Final business concluded was the approval to temporarily change BOE meeting start times from 6 pm to 5 pm for the November through February meetings. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-10/11/2024-6AM)
