Quilt judge Mary Dacres points to Cheryl LaBagh’s “Sunflower Star” quilt as she declares it Best of Show.

LAFOLLETTE, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF)— Cheryl LaBagh of Jacksboro won the “Best of Quilts” award and a $100 prize for her quilt, “Sunflower Star,” which earned a perfect score. Cheryl used a foundation piecing technique to craft diamond-shaped pieces into a star pattern accented with sunflower-themed fabric.

“The quilters of east Tennessee entered top-notch quilts, which made my job both difficult and enjoyable” said experienced quilt show judge Mary Dacres of Cincinnati, Ohio. She used a standard quilt show scoring rubric to judge each quilt for visual impact, design and construction.

A total of 51 quilts were evaluated across 10 categories representing a wide variety of quilting techniques. These quilts will be on display at the Cove Lake State Park Pavilion on Saturday, September 28, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Also on display will be four quilts by beloved local quilter Marianne Bohon, who passed away in 2023. 

Judging took place at The Quilt Patch inside Woodson’s Mall in La Follette. “Our business is home to enthusiastic quilters who love to gather for classes and fellowship,” said Marie King, owner of The Quilt Patch. “Louie Bluie is the most-anticipated event for our customers, so we’re honored to serve as sponsor of quilt judging.”
