CJUC urges customers to not use water until further notice

JACKSBORO, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF)- Caryville-Jacksboro Utilities Manager Frank Wallace issued a statement on Thursday urging customers to not use their water until they hear back from the utility.

The State of Tennessee required the Campbell County Road Department to move diesel contaminated soil from a site and to store it and to cover it for late disposal.  The stored contaminated soil material, during the recent rain events, leeched water from the storage area downhill into a karst depression leading to an underground aquifer some three hours upstream from the CJUC’s Cave Springs water supply.  Small amounts of the contaminated runoff entered Cave Springs and was pumped into the CJUC’s raw water storage supply.  The raw water was processed at the facility and entered a small portion of the utility’s water usage area.  Upon discovery of the county’s leached water, CJUC immediately shut down the facility, notified the State, and began flushing all fire hydrants in the area and taking samples as required by the State to be tested by the State and results returned to the utility. CJUC will continue to sample and flush the area until all samples are cleared by the State.
