KNOXVILLE, TN (WLAF)- Campbell Head Coach Taylor Ownbey, along with Silas Weaver and Sam Sexton, represented the Orange-and-Blue at Friday morning’s media day at Three Ridges Golf Course in Knoxville.

Ownbey spoke on some of the changes being made to the coaching staff for the 2026 season. Tyler Drummer, the new offensive coordinator, brings a new look to the Orange-and-Blue offense. “We’re going to have some misdirection on the offense. We’ll still have a spread look and throw the ball around. (Drummer) does a great job and makes it to where I don’t have to worry about the offense, and I’m excited about that.”

On the defensive side of the ball, expect a feisty bunch of Cougars. “Coach (Bryan) Lee is going to bring a bit more pressure than we have been. He has 30+ years of coaching experience and does a great job,” said Coach O. “It is going to help me most with game management. Being able to hand over the reins on defense is going to help me a ton on Friday nights and throughout the week,” continued Ownbey.

Campbell County starts the season on August 21st at Lenoir City, so it’s crunch time for the Cougars to get prepared for the first game on “The Hill.” Ownbey mentioned that “We have two scrimmages and a jamboree leading up to the season. We want to maximize our practice time, weight room time, and learning from those scrimmages and the 7-on-7 we were in at Powell.”

WLAF also spoke with quarterback Silas Weaver and WR/DB Sam Sexton on Friday morning. Both Weaver and Sexton are playing their final season on the Hill, with Weaver being a first year starting quarterback.

Sexton said, “We just need to stay positive and work hard throughout the season and see where that takes us.” Weaver spoke about the mentality that the Cougars should have. “We need to be an example and keep a positive energy here in the county and pass it along to the next generation of Cougars.”

Owenby also spoke about how difficult it is to build a program in the wake of the new one-time transfer rule instituted by the TSSAA on July 1st. “I think it’s all about improving and keeping building the program to where kids want to be here. We want to be involved in the community…because I’ll be honest with you, there’s no better place to play football than on ‘The Hill’.” We love the community, and we want the community to realize that to keep kids at our school.

It’s almost a month away from the 52nd season of Cougar Football, and WLAF has been there for every broadcast and will be again this campaign. Les Martin, Brent Allen, and Jake Miller will bring you all the coverage of the Cougars over the WLAF Doyle’s Tire Sports Network. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED 7-13-2026 6AM)
