CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF)- The Mayor and Aldermen for the Town of Caryville held the monthly meeting Monday night with an unusually full audience. The cause of high attendance was the second reading of the data center ordinances.
Those in attendance voiced concerns about the impact data centers would have in the area. Some of the concerns voiced were the impact a data center could have on electricity, water, property value, and noise levels.
Vice Mayor Josh Monday told the audience “60 days ago we had nothing to stop data centers”. Monday continued “the town is putting heavy restrictions on this type of business”. Town Attorney Elizabeth Burrell stated the town is being as restrictive as it can be, the most restrictive without an outright ban. It was also clarified during the meeting that no one had contacted the town about a data center.

Ordinance 2026-05 amending the annual operating budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2025, and ending June 30, 2026, Ordinance 2026-06 amending article III; definitions: to include “data center” in the Town of Caryville and Ordinance2026-07 amending article VII; section 707 to include “data center” as a special exception in the M-1 planned industrial park district had a second and final reading. These ordinances were approved.
The board discussed the repair of the garbage truck bed, Town Administrator Craig Bennett stated that during a routine inspection a 10 ft long crack and bad bushings were discovered in the bed. The town received four quotes for the repair, the lowest quote was for $2,400 from Complete Welding and Fabrication. The board approved the quote for the repair.
Phase Two of the Caryville Cares Playground is slated to begin soon. Vice Mayor Monday reported that during the construction the contractors had requested to close the road between the playground and the area where they will be working for the duration of the project. The closure is requested for safety reasons. The closure could potentially last 30 days. While discussing the upcoming work on the park, Monday made a plea to the public for their help in keeping the park clean and taking care of the equipment. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-06/09/2026-6AM)
