JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- Charlotte McCoy, Interim Director of Schools, chaired her first school board meeting Tuesday night in Campbell County. McCoy will officially become the permanent director of schools at the May Board of Education meeting.

Eighteen teachers were given tenure at last night’s board of education meeting. Teachers must have completed five years in the Campbell County School System and have a level of overall effectiveness (LOE) score of four for the past two years.

The board discussed the Campbell County High School baseball and soccer fields lighting. Maintenance Foreman Stan Marlow told the board the lights should be installed Thursday-Friday or Monday-Tuesday. Brandon Johnson made a motion to amend the agenda so the board could discuss the possibility of advertising for bids on replacing the poles and lights for the fields. After a brief discussion was held, the board agreed to put the items out for bid. Marlow told the board the cost of replacing the lights would run somewhere between $700,000-$750,000.

Several executive actions were approved beginning with the approval of an agreement between the Campbell County School District and PCS for the purchase of E-Rate Category 2 services through the state master contract. Next was the approval of the bid for managed internet broadband services to PCS for $48,492. CCBOE will pay 15% of this amount. Then the board approved CCHS FFA to attend the FFA State Convention in Gatlinburg March 22-25. Four school trips were approved for the CCHS JROTC to attend JCLC Camp at the Wendell H. Ford Regional Training Center (WHFRTC) located just outside of Greenville in Western Kentucky, on June 26; the four days will be determined at a later date. CCHS Cheerleading to attend UCA Summer Camp at the University of Tennessee July 7-July 10 was approved along with the CCHS girls’ basketball team traveling to Pensacola Beach for a team tournament Dec. 28-Dec. 31. Jellico Elementary kindergarten and first grade to attend Air Raid in London, Kentucky, on April 30, was approved.

BOE Chairman Jeffrey Miller was absent from the meeting. However, Vice-Chairman Jamie Wheeler discussed the dates for special called meetings to work on the budget. Those dates are April 21, 22, 23, 27 and 28 at 5:30pm, at the courthouse. Wheeler reported that Miller would like Brandon Johnson to chair a contract committee for the director of schools. Components he would like to see included are the length of the contract and a buyout amount. Johnson requested the finance director provide the contracts of the last four directors, and he would like one board member from each district to take part in the committee.
