Traffic light could be coming to west entrance to Walmart

TDOT study reveals 19 wrecks occurred from 2022 to 2025 at four lane cut across near Zaxby’s

JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- It appears there could soon be a resolution to the traffic woes coming for the cut across from Appalachian Hwy (the four lane) to Mt. Perkins Lane near Zaxby’s.

Yesterday afternoon, at the regular monthly meeting for the Town of Jacksboro, State Representative Dennis Powers spoke to the board of mayor and aldermen. Powers shared that he had spoken with TDOT who recently completed a traffic study for the intersection. The study revealed there had been 19 wrecks between 2022 and 2025. Powers reported this was five times the state average. Given the information gained in the traffic study Powers stated the intersection does meet the criteria for a traffic light, however it does need a funding source. The cost of a traffic light could cost approximately $1 million. The options the town has for funding are the town can pay for it, apply for federal grants or apply for a state safety grant. Powers told Mayor Shayne Green that he would need a letter from the town stating the town would maintain the light. Once he receives the letter, they can begin to apply for grants to fund the project. Powers was unable to give a timeline of when the light could be installed.

The board approved increasing Dan Gearing’s hourly rate to $22 and paying him the recorder salary of $420 per month. Also approved was a pay increase for Elaine Morton to $20 an hour. Cody O’Mary was approved as a full-time police officer at the rate of $23 an hour.

Mayor Shayne Green requested to have the town’s attorney look at the restrictions and regulations on subdivisions in the town. Green requested this be done to see if any ordinances need changes. The board approved this item.

Meetings for the board of mayor and aldermen will start meeting the last Monday of the month at 2 pm. However the January meeting is scheduled for January 8 which is a Tuesday.

The Beer Board approved five beer permit renewals. Those renewals were for Dash ‘N’ Go, Tobacco Mercantile, Wal-Mart, Dollar General Store and Eagle Mart. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-12/05/2025-6AM)
