JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – It’s almost football time in Campbell County, and as a matter of fact, it’s today. It’s Campbell County and Seymour meeting on Reynolds Field on Friday at 6pm in a preseason scrimmage.
The Cougar football team has been putting in preseason work on Reynolds Field in the heat, full-pads, and the weight room. All this practice and hard work will be put to its first test on Friday in a game that does not count toward the Orange-and-Blue’s record, but it will go a long way in preparing Campbell for its season.
The Seymour Eagles venture in from Northwest Sevier County to battle the Cougars in the first scrimmage of the season. The last time these two teams met on the gridiron was during the 2020 regular season. The Cougars prevailed 34-12 at Seymour Householder Field.

Cougar Quarterback Eli Lawson rifles the football downfield during Tuesday morning’s practice.
Both squads, Campbell and Seymour, are with new coaches at the helm of the program. For the visiting Eagles, it’s Caleb Olive. For the Cougars, it’s Taylor Ownbey who was the defensive coordinator last season for the Cougars.

Ownbey’s Coaching staff oversees a play from scrimmage.
Campbell has been working diligently up until this point and the work most definitely does not stop now. “This scrimmage is a great opportunity for our guys” said Coach Ownbey following a recent practice. “It allows us to see what we are doing well and fix the mistakes before it counts on August 22.” That’s the date of Campbell’s first regular season game at Lenoir City.

Second-team Cougars practice a run play
For three days last week, and all of this week, the Cougars were suited up in full pads and helmets; a time period the coaching staff is calls “Acclimation Week”.
Campbell’s first game where the score counts to its record is on August 22 at Lenoir City at 7pm.
