Lady Cougars win, Cougars fall; district opener is Tuesday at home with Central

By Clayton Carroll

MARYVILLE, TN (WLAF)- It was a rare Saturday night game for your Campbell High Basketball teams. A trip to Maryville to William Blount High School was on tap for the Lady Cougars and Cougars.

Up first, was the girls’ game. The Lady Cougars and Lady Governors played a thriller that came down to the wire. It was a very physical affair with an extreme amount of fouls being called.

Campbell, however, showed that it was the more physical team, and worked through the adversity that came from the whistle.

In the first half, the Lady Cougars trailed by as many as nine points. However, they rallied to tie the game at 24 heading into the halftime break. The third and fourth quarters were back-and-forth battles with the Lady Cougars edging out Blount by a final score of 56-54.

For the second game in a row Saylor Hutcheson led the scoring column for Campbell. Tuesday against Clinton she scored 18; Saturday against William Blount she had her season high of 20 points. Jayden Kitts was right behind Hutch with 16 points, and on the defensive side of the basketball Kitts had four critical steals. Bella Lester racked up 11 points for Campbell. Carley Kitts totaled six points, and Lacey Pemberton had five points.

Pemberton made her impact however when it came to rebounding the basketball for Campbell. Pemberton had nine rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass. Campbell in total had 27 rebounds, six offensive.

As for the Cougars, it was a rough night at Blount. Campbell started off well, leading the Govs by as many as seven in the first half. However, the game was a tale of two halves. William Blount outscored Campbell County in the second half 34-13, taking home a 59-43 win.

Leading the scoring for the Orange-and-Blue was Gavin Cox with 12 points. Will Croley scored 11 points. Keegan Nelson, the Mills Door and More Player of the Game, tallied a tough, hard-fought 10 points. Luke Browning scored eight, and Jake Hatmaker rounded out the scoring with two points.

Up next for both the Lady Cougars and Cougars is their district opener. Knox Central comes to Brown Gym on Tuesday. Josh Parker sends you all the live, televised and radio coverage over the WLAF Doyle’s Tire Sports Network which consists of radio AM 1450, FM 100.9, TV 1089, 1450wlaf.com, Roku TV, Amazon Fire TV, YouTube, Facebook, Alexa, and Twitch.
