KNOXVILLE, TN (WLAF)- Both the Karns Beavers and the Campbell County Cougars were desperate for a win entering Friday night’s contest. Each team was also longing for their first all-important region win, and Karns had dropped five games in a row.
The Cougars won the toss and in unprecedented fashion, elected to receive the football, very rare for a Mark Pemberton led team.
Campbell put together one of its best drives of the season with Gavin Owens capping off the 72-yard drive with a nine yard touchdown run.

From this point forward, however, it was all Karns, at least for the next two and a half quarters. The Beavers quickly built a 32-7 lead.
This is where something clicked for his Cougars, according to Coach Mark Pemberton. He said they got tougher. Owens struck again. This time it was a 48 yard sprint to the crib for six more points.

From the hold of Paul Stassek, Rylan Sanders knocks through an extra point for Campbell on a record setting night for Sanders.
Following a Cougar defensive stop, Rylan Sanders made Cougar football history. Sanders drilled a 44 yard field goal, breaking Gary Bowlin’s 39 yard field goal record set back in 1983.
Another Rylan Sanders moment came on an onside kick. He perfectly bounced the football on the turf, and Campbell County’s Luke Lindsay fell on top of the football, giving the Cougars a fighting chance.

With new life, Campbell methodically moved the football down the four year old turf field at Karns. Led by offensive lineman Aiden Evans, Robert Kirby, Dorian Cable, and Jace Cloyd; Gavin Owens, Keegan Cowan, and freshman Braydon Graham alternated carries with Owens punching it in the end zone.
It was now a one possession game, 32-25. Campbell would need a stop. However, they could not get the ball back. The game ended, and so did Campbell’s playoff hopes.

Pemberton said that Campbell County’s football program is not built on moral victories, but he was extremely proud of his team’s fight and grit.
The Cougars get to rest up next week as it is fall break, and no game is scheduled for Friday. On October 25, Campbell will host Morristown East. Les Martin, Brent Allen, and Josh Parker will send you all the action over the various media outlets on the WLAF Doyle’s Tire Sports Network.
