Powell wins over Campbell 47 to 33

By Clayton Carroll

FOUNTAIN CITY, TN (WLAF) – Your Cougars, having lost eight in a row, traveled to Central High School for round one of the district 3-AAAA tournament. In the win-or-go home match-up, Campbell, the six seed was facing off against three seed, Powell Panthers. Powell got the best of the Orange-and-Blue twice in the regular season. At Brown Gym, the Panthers easily won 50-28, and at Hunter Gymnasium in Powell, the Cougars fell 58-51.

Powell made the first basket a minute in a half into the game, but that was quickly matched by Will Croley finding Gavin Cox for two points. The Panthers pushed their lead out to ten points with 1:30 to go in the first quarter before Browning drained a deep three to cut the lead down to 17-10 at the end of the first.

Offense was hard to come by for the Cougars in the second quarter to say the least, as the Orange-and-Blue mustered only four points in the second frame. At the mid-game break, Campbell trailed Powell 25-14.

Jordan Day drilled a three, and Luke Browning connected on back-to-back midrange jumpers to slash the Powell lead to 25-21 two minutes into the third quarter. After a Tyler Kitts offensive board and bucket, Powell was hanging on to an ever-so-slight lead of 25-23 after the 9-0 Cougar run. Unfortunately for Campbell, the Panthers answered this run with a 5-0 run of their own; and with 3:24 to go in the third quarter, Powell led 30-23. The Panthers bumped the lead back up to ten at the end of the third 35-25.

The fourth quarter would turn out to be the final quarter for the 2023-2024 Cougar squad. When the horn sounded, Campbell’s season came to an end. The Orange-and-Blue fell to Powell 47-33.

The leading scorer for your Cougars was Luke Browning who scored 12 points. Tyler Kitts, your local realtor Gage Dople Player of the Game, finished second in the scoring column with 11 points. Five points came from Gavin Cox. Jordan Day totaled three points, and Will Croley tallied two points. Cole Miller, Keegan Nelson, and Logan Day all played but did not score.

The Cougars finished the year at 7 and 19 overall with a 1 and 9 record in district play.
