LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Thank you for your questions surrounding the razing of the more than 100 year old home on Nevada Avenue. Firefighters with the La Follette Fire Department and crews from La Follette Public Works are handling the demolition.
The Readers Digest version is that the house was donated to the City of La Follette. The home actually sold in a delinquent tax sale, and the person who bought it had not seen the property before buying it, according to city officials. As a result, the owner donated the property to the city due to its beyond-repair condition.

The property has been a blithe to the neighborhood for the past few years, and here’s where the demolition project stands as of Wednesday afternoon.
The city will clean up the property, and once completed, it will surplus and auction the property, based on comments from a city official. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 12/14/2023-6AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF WLAF’S CHARLIE HUTSON)
My grandparents, Grace and Leonard Longmire lived in this home at 114 Nevada Ave. for many years until their deaths in 1973. Sad to see it let go necessitating this demolition. My Dad, Charles Longmire, lived here with his 3 siblings, most of his life until he and my mother, Betty Ayers, married in 1954. Many memories were made here.
